UNESCO: How the Internet became toxic (and what tools we built to fix it!)
Overview
UNESCO tasked us with a critical mission: to visually explain the growing issue of online toxicity and showcase the innovative tools developed to combat it. "How the Internet became toxic (and what tools we built to fix it!)" aimed to demystify the complex web of misinformation, hate speech, and online harassment that plagues the digital landscape. Our challenge was to create an engaging and accessible video that not only highlighted the problem but also presented tangible solutions. We needed to convey the urgency of the situation while instilling a sense of hope and empowerment, showcasing UNESCO's efforts to foster a safer and more inclusive internet for all. The video needed to be informative, engaging and inspire action.
Approach
Our approach to "How the Internet became toxic (and what tools we built to fix it!)" was rooted in clarity, visual storytelling, and a focus on solutions. We began by working closely with UNESCO's experts to distill complex data and research into a compelling narrative. The animation style was designed to be modern and approachable, using a dynamic mix of motion graphics, character animation, and screen recordings to illustrate the various forms of online toxicity. We employed a clear and concise visual language, using metaphors and analogies to make complex concepts easily digestible for a global audience. The video's structure followed a logical progression, starting with the historical context of the internet's evolution, then delving into the specific challenges of online toxicity, and finally showcasing the practical tools developed by UNESCO to address these issues. We prioritized showcasing real-world examples and user-friendly interfaces to demonstrate the effectiveness of these tools. We also focused on creating a visually engaging experience, using dynamic transitions and a vibrant color palette to maintain viewer interest. The overall goal was to empower viewers with knowledge and inspire them to take an active role in creating a safer and more inclusive online environment.
